I recently received a connection from someone that had some relevant experience in my industry. I gladly accepted as the purpose of LinkedIn is to network, share ideas and concepts, and to enhance my knowledge/skills in my industry. Within 48 hours, this individual had inundated me with numerous messages of products and aggressive sales pitches that eventually caused me to remove this person as a contact. While I think it is appropriate for someone to send a post or link to offer a service or product, repeated messages and aggressive sales tactics are inappropriate. I thought the following were good reminders to me on how to professionally navigate the LinkedIn social media experience:

  • Don’t Mix Business and Pleasure. …
  • Use Caution Posting and Tagging Photos. …
  • Be Self-Centered in Small Doses. …
  • Understand That Your Sense of Humor Isn’t Universal. …
  • Don’t Be Reactive. …
  • Avoid Over-Sharing. …
  • Build a Legacy for the Future. …
  • Don’t Misrepresent Yourself.
